Reclaiming Birth: The Return of Innu Midwifery (Video)

For generations, Innu families were forced to leave their communities to give birth, far from their homes, families, language, and traditions.

Reclaiming Birth follows four women as they train to become the next generation of Innu midwives, helping restore community-based birth and strengthen maternal and child health in Labrador's Innu communities.

Through the advocacy of Innu leader Thea Penashue and the guidance of midwifery and maternal-child health specialist Gisela Becker, this historic initiative is working to return birth to Innu communities and create new opportunities for future generations. At its heart, this is a story of resilience, leadership, cultural revitalization, and the women helping bring birth home.
